Addis Ababa: Vegetarians Heaven

It is the month of Megabit 2005 in Addis Ababa.  It is the first month that brings the fasting season in Ethiopia. It’s been three days now since the fasting season officially starts and it’s going to continue for the next 53 days till the Ethiopian Easter Holiday which is going to take place on May 5, 2013 in western calendar.

It is Lenten offerings for all the orthodox religion followers in Ethiopia, when all forms of animal products are forbidden and only vegetable dishes are eaten.

Though Addis Ababa loves to eat meat, there are different kinds of traditional fasting dishes which are healthy, delicious and vegetarian rejoice.  Since Ethiopian dishes revolves around traditional wat (stew), there are famous fasting dishes like Meser wat (lentil curry) and Shiro wat (Chick pea or bens puree), which prepared in vegetable cooking oil and usually accompany by different kinds of vegetables like cabbage, potatoes, spinach, carrots and so many more. That means, not only vegetables and fruits are playing role at this time of year but also grains and legumes.

In order commemorate this season, almost all Addis Ababa’s restaurants, juice places and cafés turned their face to fruits and vegetables, come up with many creative ways to attract their local customers and visitors alike by preparing Fasting buffet which is so overwhelming, vegetable pizzas, organic fresh fruit juices, banana muffin and so many healthy traditional fasting dishes.  Fruits and Vegetables are in great demand right now in Addis Ababa city.

If you are in Addis take advantage of this season and enjoy all these healthy foods which you can find everywhere at reasonable price. And for all the vegetarian travelers, coming to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) during the fasting period is like being in Vegetarians Heaven.

For this year, the fasting season of Ethiopia takes place from March 11 – May 5, 2013. Time to enjoy delicious fasting Ethiopian dishes, getting Healthy and nourishing your soul!
